I bought this as a replacement for my old PCR800 rain gauge, which was originally part of a kit for my Oregon Scientific full weather station. This updates to my console and ultimately to my WeatherDisplay software. The bucket tips every 0.04" of rain that accumulates (and measures the correct amount). Every time the bucket tips, it sends a signal to the console, enabling your computer to automatically keep track of the total rainfall as well as the rainfall rate. My first rain gauge lasted at least 6 or 7 years before I had to replace it, after the gauge stopped transmitting to the console. The batteries only need to be replaced once every few years. They are a pain to get to (the gauge has to be unscrewed and removed from the base). Overall, this is a very durable gauge which will last a long time.
