Long gone are the days when Operation was every kid’s first anatomy teacher. We’ve got smart technology now, and every once in a while, that smart technology is used to make some of us smarter. Oregon Scientific has a new toy called Smart Anatomy that endeavors to get kids familiar with how the human body works, but the end game is familiar to parents everywhere — getting kids to eat their vegetables.
Smart Anatomy is an educational toy in the form of Alex, a guy (or girl) who seems pretty stoked about having his/her guts and muscles showing — the set comes with face stickers for both a boy and a girl. Hopefully kids will be equally stoked — all of those exposed body parts can be removed and prodded with a special stylus, which will prompt an explanation of what that part is and how it works. There’s also a poster and booklet with more information about the human body, making it a pretty solid intro to anatomy for even young kids.
Being that it’s directed at ages five and up, Smart Anatomy does its best to make education fun, too. There are five game modes that challenge kids to learn and recall information about individual organs and entire systems, with 20 activities in all. And, yes, one of those modes is nutrition mode, where kids will learn about the importance of healthy eating to the maintenance of the body.
