Anatomy is an important subject for children to learn and a new product from Oregon Scientific called “Smart Anatomy” is aiming to make this process both educational and fun. “Smart Anatomy” is a game intended for children ages five and older, it is essentially a plastic replica of the human body that enables young kids to explore the fascinating human body and its complex systems. The plastic replica is shaped like a boy and named “Alex.” According to the official press release:

Alex is the voice of Smart Anatomy and is ready to play! With 5 game modes (Fun, Games, Nutrition, System, Touch) children can choose from 20 activities to play. There are many areas to explore on each body part and your child will enjoy detaching the body parts from the body stand and freely exploring their contents with the Smart Pen. Use the wireless Smart Pen to touch the detachable body parts and learn about nutrition, interesting facts, names of the anatomy, system functions and more. The optical sensor inside the Smart Pen will read invisible dots printed on each body part, triggering audio content played directly out of the Smart Pen or via headphones.

Moreover, the kit comes with a sixteen page booklet and a double-sided poster that provides additional information for Smart Anatomy. The booklet contains information concerning major body systems, nutrition and food categories while the double-sided poster with the body diagram is a quick reference guide that lists the names of major body parts.

Smart Anatomy is truly an exceptional toy. It is extremely visual yet inviting--the illustrations are detailed yet just animated enough to come across as accessible even to very young children. The electronic pen/pointer that comes (with batteries) in the kit recognizes the various body types on the diagram when it is placed on them--something that will undoubtedly come across as magical to children. Moreover, the toy is packed full of information and games that engage kids and make learning fun--“Little Doctor” is an especially fun mode. The only slight complaint is that some of the medical terms--although proper--can be a little difficult to remember, even for an adult. The fact that this doll has the ability to switch from a boy’s face to a girl’s makes it all the more customizable for the specific child. In fact, this item could be used to teach an entire group of children. Anyone who is seeking to teach their children about biology should certainly consider purchasing this product.

February 12, 2016,

Kids of all ages are always curious about how things work, especially their own bodies. Smart Anatomy from Oregon Scientific is the perfect way to teach kids about human anatomy. Smart Anatomy is packed with tons of information and activities of various levels so that it can be a learning tool for children of all ages and will provide years of educational experience.

SmartAnatomy-FeaturedSmart Anatomy is composed of a base and body stand with 16 soft body parts, a smart pen, a poster, and a booklet. The pieces, organs on the front of the stand, skeletal ones on the back side, are soft and easy to handle and are printed with invisible ink that the smart pen can read. There are over 150 touch points on all of the pieces that can be used for learning and the 20 various activities. Each piece is also double-sided. The back side of each organ or structure provides an inside or detailed view of the system.

My wife, who is currently studying college Anatomy, was quite impressed with the level of detail in a device made for children. She even showed it to her professor who was also quite impressed.

SmartAnatomy-TouchAlex, the name of the interactive body, can be made into either a boy or a girl with a face sticker. They aren’t removable once you place them but we used double-sided tape to be able to switch back and forth (because when can any two-year-old make up his mind and stick to it).

SmartAnatomy-FunctionsThe plethora of modes and activities is almost overwhelming–there are five modes, each with four different activities. However, they vary in skill and maturity level so we barely scratched the surface–my son is only two, so below the five and up recommended age, but even at two he found plenty to do. The five modes are Touch, System, Healthy Life, Games, and Fun. Each mode has activities that provide or test knowledge of parts and systems while also making it fun, and, hopefully, also guiding children to make healthy choices in life about eating and taking care of their bodies.

SmartAnatomy-SkeletonMy son focused on just one of the interactive activities–the Touch naming. After turning on the pen, you point it at different areas on the parts, and the pen will explain just tell you what it is. My son knows more anatomical parts then I do now.

SmartAnatomy-AnatomyThe other activity he really enjoys, which is totally age appropriate for him, is using Alex like a puzzle. He takes all of the pieces off of her and then puts them back on. It’s extra challenging, and rewarding, due to every piece having two sides and the stand itself having two sides.

SmartAnatomy-PuzzleHe’s asked to get Alex out several times each day since Smart Anatomy arrived and with all of the opportunities for future play here, I am certain it will be a staple in our house for years to come.

SmartAnatomy-BookSmart Anatomy also comes with a little booklet that illustrates the body systems in detail–explaining what each organ in the system does, and how the system works overall. It’s great reinforcement of what the toy itself teaches in a nice, easily portable format.

One of the other nice things about the smart pen I wanted to mention is that it has a headphone jack. This makes it very easy to allow your child to play away with Smart Anatomy without necessarily driving you mad when you hear “cerebellum” for the 100th time in a row.

I highly recommend Smart Anatomy for all the kids in your life, but certainly for any who are interested and curious about their bodies.

Note: I received a unit for review purposes but all thoughts and opinions above are my own.

My kids' love coming home from school and finding a package waiting at our door or upstairs on the counter. They're masters at opening packaging to see what's inside. Recently we received a new product that they were so excited about that they practically shredded the box in their efforts to get inside and start playing. And I was thrilled to see that, because the product in question is actually an educational one! Score! It's the Smart Anatomy Interactive Human Body from Oregon Scientific and it has been an enormous hit in our house. Here's a bit about it.

Meet Alex – your child’s newest pal who knows all about the human body. Alex is the voice of Smart Anatomy from Oregon Scientific, the educational and fun toy that helps kids learn about the body’s complex systems with more than 600 sounds and information and 150 touchpoints accessible with a talking Smart Pen.
Created by Oregon Scientific for ages 5+, with Smart Anatomy kids can explore the human anatomy and discover what makes their heart beat, or how organs function, or what’s included in a healthy and balanced diet! Playing makes learning fun, and Smart Anatomy serves up educational content in the form of games and activities like True or False and Memory.
Ethan and Vivian love this toy and I love that it's helping them learn so much about the human body and how it works! It's been so fun to watch and listen to them as they play and laugh. Even I'm learning the names of a few things that I didn't know before! The toy is very sturdy and the magnets that allow you to switch around the layers of the body are strong and do a good job of holding everything in place. The toy comes with two faces, a boy face and a girl face. These cannot be switched around once the sticker has been applied, so we've left ours temporarily faceless while we decide which one to use.

This Smart Anatomy toy is easy to use, fun and educational. My kids have been playing with it for weeks now and still return to it again and again. That's always a sign of a real hit! I highly recommend this for the youngsters in your life!

Our kids have fallen in love with Alex, the voice of Smart Anatomy. Our kids (ages 5 through 14) all gave this interactive educational toy a try and really enjoyed it.
Mom’s Lifesavers was provided with Smart Anatomy to facilitate this review. All the opinions expressed are our own.
Right out of the box this was a hit with our kids. The youngest started taking the magnetic pieces (almost like a puzzle) off of the clear frame.
One side contains bones and the other organs and tissue. Our 5 year old loved putting the pieces together AND taking them apart, repeatedly.
Our 9 and 10 year old went right for the pen. The pen is wireless and comes with batteries in it – this educational toy is ready right out of the box – now that is a mom’s lifesaver. There is an optical sensor in it that reads ‘invisible dots’ that are on every body part which triggers an audio response. The sound comes right out of the pen or headphones can be used.
Our 14 year old was drawn out of his room with all the fun the younger kids were having. Right away he went to quiz mode to test his anatomy knowledge – it is safe to say he did better than I – even I was learning from Alex
Also included is a 16 page booklet and a double-sided full color poster that has more information on Smart Anatomy. The product is very intuitive and easy to navigate. We were playing games like True or False and Memory in minutes.
The booklet included contains information about major body systems, nutrition and food categories. The Smart Anatomy poster lists all the names of the major body parts, our kids found this really helpful when they were answering quiz questions.

Macaroni Kid

Anyone who knows my little son knows that he has wanted to be a Dr. for as long as he can remember. He is always wanting books on the Human Body and loves reading about surgeries and looking at all of those “yucky” pictures as my youngest describes. As a Mom, I am always encouraging him to follow his dreams and am interested in providing him with any opportunities I can to encourage him in his pursuit of being a Dr. be it through books, trips to the Health Museum or through toys.
I was so excited when I discovered the Smart Anatomy toy by Oregon Scientific for ages 5+.

The company says that “...this helps kids learn about the body’s complex systems with more than 600 sounds and information and 150 touchpoints that can be discovered with a talking Smart Pen.” My little guy could not wait to open up this toy and check it out.

Our Smart Anatomy model is called Alex and he comes with the model, a Wireless Smart Pen, Poster, Booklet and a User Manual. There is also another face label to make this either a girl or a boy depending on your little one which is something that I really like as a Mom.
How to play: Take your smart pen and touch any part of the human body to learn more about it.

You can also play games and take little mini quizzes to see how much knowledge you have. I absolutely love this toy because it’s so interactive which holds their attention and my little guy needed almost no supervision or help to play with Alex which gave me time to get dinner on the table…such a winner. I highly recommend this toy because it’s educational, interactive and requires minimal adult help.

Long gone are the days when Operation was every kid’s first anatomy teacher. We’ve got smart technology now, and every once in a while, that smart technology is used to make some of us smarter. Oregon Scientific has a new toy called Smart Anatomy that endeavors to get kids familiar with how the human body works, but the end game is familiar to parents everywhere — getting kids to eat their vegetables.

Smart Anatomy is an educational toy in the form of Alex, a guy (or girl) who seems pretty stoked about having his/her guts and muscles showing — the set comes with face stickers for both a boy and a girl. Hopefully kids will be equally stoked — all of those exposed body parts can be removed and prodded with a special stylus, which will prompt an explanation of what that part is and how it works. There’s also a poster and booklet with more information about the human body, making it a pretty solid intro to anatomy for even young kids.

Being that it’s directed at ages five and up, Smart Anatomy does its best to make education fun, too. There are five game modes that challenge kids to learn and recall information about individual organs and entire systems, with 20 activities in all. And, yes, one of those modes is nutrition mode, where kids will learn about the importance of healthy eating to the maintenance of the body.
