I had the previous model RM313PNA for 8 years and it's been our favorite bedroom clock because it's so small, cute, and simple, and love the ceiling projection when peeking with one eye open in the middle of the night. However I always wished the projection was brighter because it gets washed out at sunrise as soon as a tiny bit of ambient sunlight gets around the window shades. So I compared the brightness of the old model with the new model, side-by-side. This new RM313PNFA is the one with the thinner numbers, and the old RM313PNA with thicker numbers . The new model appears around 20% brighter because the beam is more narrowly focused -- more concentrated light.

Since nobody had reviewed this, I wanted to let you all know a few things.

I had the older model of this, and its laser had gone out a while ago. So when I saw this as a lightning deal, I decided to go ahead and get it so I could have my ceiling clock again. I was delighted to see that they revamped the look of the laser display. My husband has a nicer Oregon Scientific laser clock on his side of the room, and its display was always better than mine. My numbers looked fat and childlike compared to his. But this new one has really skinny numbers now. It makes it a little clearer to read. I was hoping it would now have a little alarm symbol in the projection display, too (like my husband's), but it still doesn't. That's one reason why this is only four stars.

Here's another awesome improvement: the buttons don't beep anymore! Yay! That means when I wake up right before my alarm goes off and I decide to turn it off and just wake up, I can do so without any noise whatsoever. You see, I sleep next to my eight-month-old baby, and if she's in a shallow enough sleep, that little beep can wake her up. Also, those beeps can get pretty annoying when you're setting up an alarm or changing a time, so it's awesome that I don't have to hear that anymore.

When I got this in the mail, I thought I'd been duped, because the package didn't say anything about this new flip feature for the projector. I don't believe it was anywhere in the instructions, either. But my husband discovered that the clock can do it; you just have to push either the plus or minus button. Simple as that. Since this feature wasn't mentioned anywhere, it made me wonder if my old one had that capability, too, but there's no way for me to find out, because it's broken. I'm not sure if I'll use this feature, since I'm used to the display the way it was, but it's nice that I have that option.

Here's a change I wasn't expecting: the alarm is different now. With the old one, it started out with one beep at a time, and then it went to two, and then it went to three, and I think that's when it also got louder. With this one, it starts out with two quick beeps and then goes to three and then four, and it never increases in volume. I really liked how the old one started with only one beep (because that's all it takes to wake me up), so I'm disappointed with this.

Overall, I'm really happy with all the improvements they made on this little clock. It even looks a little shinier. I'm mostly disappointed with the change in alarm sound, but I love the new look of the projection display, so that still earns it four stars from me. I've included a picture of the new projection display and a video of the sound of the alarm, for your enjoyment.

Love this clock, did have some problems. Advise plugging it in, put in batteries, set your time zone and leave it to pick up the time by itself. If red led display is backwards, just press the + button to flip it.

This is the 3rd clock I've had. The first one I got as a present out of a catalog and had it for about 5 years. I was super excited when I came across another one on Amazon! The numbers on that one ended up fading out after about 2 years but I love this clock so much I don't care. This one has a Flip projection which is pretty cool so you can project it from a different angle. I like that the numbers don't look grainy. I absolutely hate sleeping without this clock so I don't have to blind myself checking my phone in the middle of the night.
